The Centre for the Community Group
In 2004 a group of local young families joined together to respond to the need for a community centre in North Dumfries and formed The Centre for the Community Group (CCG). They envisioned a complex that would include a new arena, community health centre, a gathering place for youth and seniors and a multi-use space for community groups. A place to unite the whole community, where everyone, young and old, can come together to live and play. A place to enjoy fitness, sports, health, creativity, recreation and a sense of community pride. A vision for the future was born.
The group registered as a charitable organization in October 2005. With dollars raised, fuelled by vision, passion, enthusiasm, hard work, dedication and fundraising including successful annual gala’s and golf tournaments, the group contributed to a community facility Needs Assessment Study, commissioned by the Township as well as a Fundraising Feasibility Study. During the Community Use Facility Needs Assessment Study local demographic research and significant consultation with stakeholders and residents was undertaken. Comparisons with other surrounding cities and towns were made to determine such issues as construction cost on similar buildings and trends regarding use of facilities. A plan was developed that recommended a significant investment to meet current and future needs. Financial commitment was sought and received from all levels of government to begin the first phase and launch the “Live and Play” campaign.
